October : A Terrific Varun Dhawan Falls in Love with a Coma Patient

October's Trailer says " THIS IS NOT A LOVE STORY " and " THIS IS A STORY ABOUT LOVE ". Yes. This Movie does not have the usual Romantic Cliché scenes which feature in Indian Romantic Dramas since Varun Dhawan's love for Shiuli Iyer begins after Shiuli dies (almost).
Dan (Varun Dhawan) and Shiuli (Banita Sandhu) are Co-Interns in a Hotel who just have a Professional Relationship with each other. There is no Romance between them. But, just about 15 mins into the Movie, she slips and falls off the Terrace of the hotel due to the presence of Winter Dew during New Year’s Eve Party. He is not present at that moment as he is away for New Year. The last words she speaks are “ Where is Dan ? ”. She is admitted into one of Delhi’s biggest Hospitals and declared to have entered into a state of “ Coma ”.
Thus begins a Beautiful Relationship between Varun Dhawan and Shiuli’s family consisting of Shiuli’s Mother (Prof. Vidya Iyer played by Gitanjali Rao), Shiuli’s Sister and Brother. When he comes to know that he was what she last talked about, he develops a strong connection with her and visits her regularly in the hospital taking care of her. All the while she is bed ridden, does not talk and responds very feebly to external stimuli. Her Mother advises him to leave her and concentrate on his career. He loses his job in Delhi, goes to Kullu but still can’t get her out of his mind and comes back to Shiuli in the hospital.
When she starts Rolling her Eyes, she is taken back to her Home and is still taken care of by Varun Dhawan. But one night, unfortunately, she has a Seizure and she passes away.
Shiuli had been named so by her Mother in Bengali after the Night Jasmine Flower which she used to collect and play with as a child. It Blooms only in October, has a very small Lifetime and so did Shiuli. Shiuli’s mother requests Varun to take the Night Jasmine Plant (Shiuli) in their Garden with him and take care of it as they have decided to Relocate to their native in South India. He takes the Night Jasmine Plant back to his home indicating that he will continue to take care and live the rest of his life with Shiuli.
Writer Juhi Chaturvedi along with Director Shoojit Sircar have delivered this Gem of a Film to Reflect on how Life can Change Forever in Seconds. When Shiuli’s Uncle becomes Pessimistic and wants to pull the plug, Varun is the most Optimistic that she will return back to Normalcy. During the days when Varun is not present in the hospital as he works in Kullu, Shiuli behaves aggressively scratching herself. When he Returns, she Calms down. She is able to Detect and Respond to his Presence and this is what the creators convey as “Love” and that it can Bloom during Unexpected Times and Situations.
